Pipe Relining vs Digging Up the Garden: How Trenchless Repair Works

When a drain fails, the traditional answer is a trench. Find the pipe, dig it up, replace the broken section, fill it in, and put back whatever was on top, which is often the expensive part.
Relining is the alternative: repair the pipe from the inside, without opening the ground. Here is how it works, and where it is and isn't the better choice.
How cured-in-place lining works
The method is usually called CIPP, for cured-in-place pipe. In practice:
Clean the line. High-pressure jetting removes scale, grease, roots and debris, because a liner will follow whatever surface it is pressed against. Skipping this step is the single most common cause of a bad liner.
Survey it. A camera run confirms the pipe is a candidate, measures the run, and records where the junctions and bends are.
Prepare the liner. A felt or fibreglass sleeve is cut to length and saturated with a two-part resin.
Install it. The liner is inverted or pulled into position through an existing access point and inflated so it presses tight against the inside of the host pipe.
Cure it. The resin hardens, using ambient temperature, hot water, steam or UV light depending on the system, into a rigid pipe within the old pipe.
Reinstate and check. Junctions are cut back open, and a final camera run confirms the result.
What you end up with is a continuous, jointless pipe inside the old one. Since roots enter through joints and cracks, sealing those is what stops the cycle of repeat blockages. The bore is slightly reduced, but a smooth new surface usually flows as well as or better than the scaled original.
Where relining is the better option
Cracked, fractured or root-invaded pipe that still holds its shape.
Pipes running under a driveway, paving, a pool surround, a building slab or a mature garden, anywhere reinstatement would cost more than the repair.
Long runs where excavation would mean a trench across the whole property.
Occupied buildings, where an open trench is a safety and access problem.
Complexes and body corporates, where digging means negotiating with everybody.
Where it is not
Honesty matters more than a sale here. Relining is the wrong answer when:
The pipe has fully collapsed. There is nothing left to line against. That section has to be dug up or replaced by another method.
The pipe is badly out of alignment or has a severe belly. A liner follows the existing shape and will not correct a fall problem. Reline a belly and you get a smooth, watertight pipe that still ponds.
The pipe is too far undersized for what the property now demands. Lining takes a little diameter, it does not add any.
There is no usable access at either end, and creating one costs more than a short trench would.
A contractor who says relining is right for every job is selling, not diagnosing.
What drives the cost
We are not going to publish a per-metre rate, because the honest answer is that it depends, and a wrong number helps nobody. What moves the price:
Length of the run and the diameter of the pipe.
Access. An existing chamber at each end is straightforward; no access at all means creating one.
Bends and junctions, each of which has to be negotiated and then reinstated.
Condition. Heavy root mass or hard scale means more cleaning time before anything can be lined.
Curing method and how quickly the line has to be back in service.
The comparison that matters is not relining versus a trench. It is relining versus the trench plus everything that goes back on top: paving, driveway, lawn, irrigation, a pool surround, and the days the property is a building site. On a paved or landscaped property that reinstatement is frequently the largest line on the excavation quote.
The sensible order
Get the line surveyed first. Find out what is actually wrong, where, and over how many metres. Then ask for both options, lined and excavated, priced against that survey.
If somebody has quoted you for excavation without putting a camera down the pipe first, they are guessing, and you are paying for the guess.
